summary. The concept of our animation is based on the destructive yet alluring pull that the mermaid has over the characters of the book. This idea of something so beautiful that causes such misery sparked our ideas and thematic process. We simplified this idea down into the visual motif of the spiral, which endlessly draws the eye towards its center. 

All the backgrounds in the film were made through the etching process and this gave our images an authenticity and texture that plunges the viewer into the 18th century.
